June 2020

Maximizing efficiency is always top of mind for any processor and upgrades to existing equipment are a cost effective and quick way to boost efficiency. In this edition of the Service Advisor we will be highlighting a few of our available upgrades and services that can help strengthen your process and protect your business.

Whether you are about to begin your processing season, are winding down and planning ahead to the next busy season or are looking for ways to improve your continual process, we are here to help you achieve your processing goals.

ADR EXOS Upgrade

The EXOS® upgrade for Key ADR® systems is a totally redesigned replacement for the cutterwheel currently installed on ADR 5 platforms. This upgrade provides increased yield and quick payback through reduced nubbin size, decreased good product loss and increased accuracy of cutting.

Cutterwheel ComparisonEXOS design innovations:

  • Knives: The EXOS cutterwheel contains 90% more knives than the ADR 5 cutterwheel at 114 knives per lane and a total of 2,508 knives, compared to 1,320 total knives in the ADR 5. This increase provides a 28% smaller cut area, adding an average of 2mm to the length of recovered strips. These knives are also metal detectable and produce zero volunteer knives.
  • Carousels: The knife carousels are metal detectable and have automatic twist compensation is built into the software, along with more accurate position indexing. The size of the EXOS carousels are 13.3” (338mm) outer diameter versus 9.5” (241mm) in the ADR 5.
  • Cams: Along with replaceable wear strips, the EXOS cams offer a more sanitary design.
  • Ejector Manifolds: The ADR EXOS manifold contains 44 air valves and 22 fiber optic knife sensors. Highly accurate indexing is accomplished by embedded induction index sensors, plus RPM and twist detection.
  • Diagnostics: The EXOS utilizes a very robust and real time G-6 based diagnostic software system. Numerous data is available, such as overall good versus missed knife throws, air valve indicators and individual lane monitoring for missed knife throws.

Automatic Valve Check

Faulty air ejector valves have a direct impact on sorter performance and lead to defects entering the final good product. Ejector valves can fail for many reasons, such as nozzle blockage, contamination, solenoid failures and connection issues. Automatic Valve Check (AVC) is a way to automatically monitor the health of individual air ejector valves.

Each ejector valve is automatically tested by determining the air flow as the valve is turned on and off. AVC characterizes the leakage of the manifold, if it exists. After testing the flow rate of known good valves, AVC will test each ejector valve flow rate and compare it to the good valves. Failed valves are tested a second time to confirm its under-performance.

AVC offers processors the following benefits:

  • Labor savings- manually checking valves is time consuming, AVC is automatic.
  • Can be performed in a noisy environment- no more listening for bad valves.
  • Easy, automatic air valve checks results in more air valve checks versus manual tests, providing a more consistent and premium sorter performance.
  • A user interface report of under-performing air valve health.
